What Movement, Which Grip?

Pull-ups & Kipping

Stay on the bar longer

High-rep kipping puts the most shear force on your palm. Hole-free stays flat and doesn't shift mid-set.

→ Velites All Terrain or Picsil RX
Muscle-ups

Control the transition

The false grip demands thin material that doesn't bunch. Rigidity helps maintain position through the catch.

→ Velites Quad Ultra or Picsil Hawk
Toes to Bar

Consistent feel every rep

TTBs need a grip that sits flat and doesn't fold over the bar. Hole-free is the only real option.

→ Velites Quad Ultra
Competition & Hero WODs

Protection over 100 reps

Carbon fiber doesn't soften under sweat. Holds up through rep 150 the same way it held rep 1.

→ Picsil Hawk or Bear KompleX Pinnacle
Double Unders

No bunching, no catches

Hole-free grips sit flat during rope work. No material to fold, no cable to catch.

→ Any hole-free model
Torn Hands Recovery

Keep training while you heal

When skin is already ripped, you need coverage. A larger grip lets you stay in the program.

→ Velites Quad Ultra XL + Callus Remover
Common questions

FAQ

Do I still need chalk with grips?
With microfiber and carbon grips, chalk is largely unnecessary. The material provides more traction than chalk alone. Some athletes add a small amount on the outside for heavy barbell work, but it's not required.
How long do grips typically last?
Training 3–5 times per week, quality grips will last 6–12 months before showing significant wear. Carbon tends to outlast leather. Rinse after each session, air dry, and they'll last considerably longer.
Hole-free vs. traditional holes — what's the difference?
Holed grips lock in via your fingers but can bunch up and slow transitions. Hole-free grips sit flat across your palm with even pressure, faster movement between exercises, and no hotspots. Almost all serious CrossFit athletes have switched.
Can I use the same grips on bar and rings?
Yes. The Velites Quad Ultra and All Terrain are particularly good for ring transitions because the flat profile follows the rotation without folding or bunching.
I'm a beginner — do I need grips right away?
Not immediately. Build some calluses first — around 2–4 weeks of bar work. Once doing consistent kipping sets or longer gymnastics WODs, grips protect your skin and let you train more frequently. The Picsil RX at €29,99 is a solid first pair.
Are there grips designed for women?
Yes. The Bear KompleX Black Diamond and Pinnacle Speed Grips are designed for smaller hands. They sit lower on the palm for a precise fit without excess material at the wrist.
